Today’s featured Southern Railway depots are Maryville, TN (1978) and Niota, TN (1978). Featured Louisville & Nashville depots are Stevenson, AL (1980) and Etowah, TN (1980)

The Southern depot in Niota, TN has been restored and serves as the city hall while the depot in Maryville, TN houses a dental clinic. The L&N depot in Etowah, TN has been restored and currently houses a museum, the Etowah Chamber of Commerce and Cultural Arts Commission. The depot in Stevenson, AL has been restored and houses a museum.

Canadian Corner: Canadian National Railway Steam Locomotives, part 2

Featured subjects on today’s Canadian Corner are Canadian National Railway steam locomotives in various locations. Engines featured include No. 5704 (MLW-1930) taking coal at London, Ontario, No. 3490 (MLW-1913) at Bay View Jct. outside Hamilton, Ontario, No. 5287 (MLW-1918) in the reclamation yard at Stratford, Ontario, No. 6234 (MLW-1943) at Windsor, Ontario, and No. 6226 (MLW-1942) at Windsor, Ontario. The yard photo was taken from the overpass at Bathurst St. in Toronto, Ontario.

Cleveland Depot Restoration Progress, part 5

This next group of restoration photos were taken between 1/31/12 and 2/10/12. Roof repair and felt installation was completed on 2/7. The original window openings in the north wall that were bricked up have now been reopened. One large opening that was used as a doorway will be bricked in up to the window opening. The interesting thing about this building’s construction is that the walls are three bricks thick. New interior stud walls are now being installed.

Cleveland Depot Restoration Progress, part 4

The photos below were taken on 1/25/12. As you can tell, work continues on the east side of the depot roof. The old shingles and felt have been stripped off. Bad roof planks have been removed and replaced with new ones, followed by new felt. Roof leader underground storm piping is being installed and backfilled with crushed stone and tamped; this will be followed by the installation of brick pavers between the depot and the curbed parking lot. The depot heating and cooling system ductwork is also being prepared for installation.

Cleveland Life, January/February 2012 issue

My 1990 painting, “Crew Change,” has been featured in the January/February 2012 issue of Cleveland Life, a Special Section published by the Cleveland Daily Banner. The article offers a glimpse into railroad history in Cleveland; the caption shares plans for the renovated depot:

The old depot is under renovation and will serve as the administrative offices and central transfer point for Cleveland Urban Area Transit buses once it is completed later this year.

Depot Doings: Lexington, KY / Cordele, GA / Bridgeport, AL / Winchester, TN

Featured Southern Railway depots this month are Lexington, KY (1978) and Cordele, GA (1978). Featured Louisville & Nashville depots are Bridgeport, AL (1980) and Winchester, TN (1978).

The Bridgeport, AL depot has been restored and is now a museum; the museum contains local artifacts and railroad memorabilia as well as a historical research library. To my knowledge, the Cordele, GA and Lexington, KY depots have been razed while the Winchester, TN depot now houses a construction company’s offices. The L&N trackage through Winchester has been removed.

Canadian Corner: Canadian National Railway Steam Locomotives

Featured subjects on today’s Canadian Corner are Canadian National Railway steam locomotives in Windsor, Ontario. Engines featured include No. 6122 (MLW-1927) next to the massive coaling tower, No. 6237 (MLW-1943) taking water, and streamlined No. 6402 (MLW-1936) posing a classic vignette with the engineer and fireman. The yard photo is at the Windsor roundhouse looking west toward the ferry transfer slips. The Lansdowne and perhaps the Manitowoc or Huron can be seen in the distance. The yard and tracks have been removed and replaced with a parking lot for the Windsor Casino.

Since the last depot photos were posted, the interior demolition and floor joist repair have been completed. Handicap ramp framing, door framing and floor repairs are in progress. The roof repair has begun; old shingles and bad roof planks are now being removed. New wood and felt are being installed. The following photos were taken between 12/22/11 and 1/10/12. The photo of the Norfolk Southern freight shows a modern day crew change.
