Today’s featured Before and After photos focus mainly on the depot’s interior. Also included are photos taken outside on the north end and a night photo with the lights on. These photos were taken between December 2011 and May 2012. The restoration’s completion this summer will bring a new meaning to the revitalization of downtown Cleveland — a change needed for quite awhile.

Depot Doings: Burgin, KY / Ooltewah, TN / Attalla, AL / Detroit, MI

Today’s featured Southern Railway depots are Burgin, KY (1980), Ooltewah, TN (1970), Attalla, AL (1978) and Michigan Central station, Detroit, MI (1982).

The Burgin, Ooltewah, and Attalla depots have been razed. The Michigan Central station in Detroit still exists; its condition is slowly declining due to the elements, and its future is unknown at this time.

Cleveland Depot Restoration Progress, part 11

The following restoration photos were taken between 5/2/12 and 5/7/12. These photos focus mainly on the brick paver installation around the depot perimeter. The grading, tamping and paver placement was completed in 5 days. Painting of the interior continues. Ceramic tile has been laid on the restroom floors and walls. New air handling equipment and ductwork has been installed along with the depot’s gutters.

The following six photos display the depot transformation progress from October 10, 2010 through April 11, 2012. Each of these photos were taken at the same location showing the progress. It is truly amazing what Tricon Construction, Inc. has accomplished during the last 16+ months; they have been doing a superior job of bringing life back to this great Southern icon and must be commended for their work.

The following restoration photos were taken between 4/16/12 and 4/26/12. These photos focus mainly on the exterior and interior painting progress. Work on the wainscoting and crown molding installation continues. Insulation has also been blown into the attic area during these listed dates. Three new doors are being installed — one on the east side, two on the west side of the depot. Two existing doors on the east side are also being reworked. A new wood roof support on the south side of the bay window is being fabricated to replace the old one that was rotten.

Today’s featured depots are Central of Georgia Railway, Marshallville, GA (1978) and Montezuma, GA (1978). The featured Southern Railway depot is Scottsboro, AL (1978) and the Louisville & Nashville Railway depot is Madisonville, TN (1978).

The Marshallville depot was built in 1912 after a fire destroyed an earlier station. Following the railroad vacating the building, it was renovated for use as a restaurant, Rosati’s Depot. Montezuma’s 1890 depot was constructed on the site of an earlier depot. The building was rennovated in 2001-2002 and serves as the Macon County Museum. The Southern Railway depot in Scottsboro, AL was originally built in 1860-1861 for the Memphis Charleston Railroad. The depot is one of only three remaining pre-Civil War railroad depots in Alabama. It is currently restored. The L&N depot in Madisonville, TN was demolished around 1979 and removed from service.

CNR No. 1319 (MLW 1908) is at Listowel, Ontario, 7/54 and CNR No. 3457 (MLW 1913) is at Merriton, Ontario, 6/51. CNR No. 6403 (MLW 1936) and CNR No. 7216 (LIMA 1912) are seen at Stratford, Ontario, 9/57.

Cleveland Depot Restoration Progress, part 9

The following restoration photos were taken between 4/3/12 and 4/11/12. These photos focus mainly on the new roof installation. The depot, when originally constructed in 1910, supported a clay tile roof. Because of the age of the building and its structural integrity, a simulated terra cotta tile roof fabricated from aluminum had to be used. The appearance similarities between the simulated roofing and clay tile are nearly undetectable. The interior walls have all been prepared for painting. Work is now progressing on the installation of ceiling crown molding as well as wall tongue and groove wainscoting. The new floor has also been installed in the break room.

Cleveland Depot Restoration Progress, part 8

The following restoration photos were taken between 3/20/12 and 3/30/12. The doorway that was in the bay window has been removed and replaced with an original window. Work continues on the doors on each side of the bay window. New windows on the north and west walls have been fabricated and installed. New sheet rock has been installed on the ceiling and walls. The joints are being filled/taped and plaster is being applied to smooth imperfections on the walls. Tongue and groove wainscoting is now being installed to the interior walls. Restroom piping and drains are installed and awaiting fixtures. The new roofing material has arrived from supplier. Electrical work continues.
